At requests from a few friends and family members (Grandma), AHorseNamedJoe is back again... it's getting wilder and wilder.

Since we last spoke... I finished up in Thailand, got a real job in the states, just got a place in DC with SEVEN other people, which will undoubtedly get crazy. I also have another website, http://www.neonamerican.com/, reviewing music and venues in the DC area, which is resulting in some really great fun when I am home.

Recent trips, one to Nicaragua for some surfing, volcanos and coffee. I got to release baby sea turtles into the ocean at night, experienced some seedy yet amazing nightlife, and learned to pop off that board and ride the wave.

Current Adventure: Layovers in Frankfurt, Germany for some Christmas markets, three weeks in Chennai, India and hopefully a four day stint in Kerala, which will be the crown jewel if we pull it off. I packed for the smoking hot south Indian weather only to step off the plane in Germany and realise I forgot about the SNOWMAGÜDEN going on in Europe right now. Now I am in Chennai, purchasing gifts and devouring Pani Pouri with some Masala Chai on the side.

The Dirt - NYE Koh Phangan

This past New Years Eve, party goers on Thailand's infamous Koh Phangan were blessed with an ever-elusive blue moon, a phenomenon that occurs 7 times in a 19 year cycle. Naturally, people flocked from everywhere you can imagine to come to the biggest party on earth, possibly the biggest party for the next three years (when another blue moon will occur). Against better judgement, I decided to bring a disposable camera and document the occasion.

Just to frame the event; the full moon party is on a beach on the island of Phangan. There are about 20 techno clubs/tents lining the beach, each with hundreds of people dancing on the sand in front. There are firedancers and even a 30 foot flaming jump rope to try. The drink of choice is a bucket of liquor, most commonly Thai whiskey, Coke and Red Bull. The people who attend are most often beautiful, adventurous, drunk and covered in glow in the dark body paint. On New Years Eve, the party is even more exciting, as fireworks explode from both ends of the beach (some before they rise to a safe height) and lanterns dot the sky as float out of sight.

I recommend a visit in 2013, something this big only happens "once in a blue moon."

I have backpacked to Calcutta, Delhi, Jaipur, Bundi and I leave in one hour for Agra. After that I will go to Varanassi, Kathmandu, Pohkara, and then a trek through the mountains of Nepal.

I have not gotten food poisoning.

I drink a lot of Masala Tea with milk.

I hope to eventually find internet that can upload pictures.

Farewell Bangkok

We laughed, we cried.... today is my last day in Bangkok for a while. Tomorrow morning at 9 AM I will board a flight Calcutta and will be in India and Nepal for the next 50 days. I will continue to blog but it will be hasty and the photos will be unedited (should be entertaining nonetheless). Anyway, I am feeling a little nostalgic about leaving behind the city I've grown to love and the kids that taught me to love it. Here are a couple pics and the map of my next journey.

Woke up at 5 am, drove four hours to Aor's parents neighborhood, had lunch, went to a temple/market, got coffee, went back to drink whiskey with the counsel of elders, took a nap/shower, wedding, had dinner, performed a rap song in front of 70 tables, sang karaoke and drank until about 3, woke up at five on the tile floor in poor shape, went to Mack's ordination as a monk, danced through the streets all the way to the temple while taking shots of whiskey against our will, watched Mack get ordained, went to the newest temple in Thailand, then to lunch on the dam, then to Palio for ice cream, and finally to a winery for... yes, more ice cream.... all in 36 hours.

I have provided some examples of my students' work below. The assignment was an exercise on the different clothes that students wear. I told the students to draw a picture of themselves in an outfit that they wear frequently and then gave them some vocabulary to use, encouraging them to draw creative pictures with lots of vocabulary. The top picture is a very accurate example of what we see students wear to school everyday. From there it became highly imaginative and, at times, disturbing. Thanks for making my day weird third grade...

During class I routinely patrol the room giving students advice and checking their work. When I get to students who enjoy practicing their English I give them a few extra minutes and ask them how their day is going and talk about their weekend, etc. One of my favorite students is a boy named Firm, he is nine years old, speaks decent English, and likes to draw pictures of guns. Earlier in the year he had a bully, "Teacha, a boy, he pushed me on the ground today." I asked him if I should talk to the student, but he knew that would only make it worse, so I told him to stand up to him next time. I think the bully (or least a student who is larger than the bully) is now his best friend.

So Firm and I, we go back. Anyway I walked up to Firm and I said, "Firm, how are you today?" He pulled me closer so he could whisper and said, "Teacha, I am fucking awesome."

I just don't know where he learned that.

College Day

College Day is a two day competition between the students of Saint Gabriel's. There are seven teams, comprised of students from every level, and each team has a color and a theme of their choice. On day one, the older students spend the day competing in track and field events and chanting at the top of their lungs. The leader of each team has to organize the chants and keep up the intensity, and in turn can seem almost possessed as he hops around failing his arms and yelling war cries. A great example of this is in the first picture, where you can see a clown leading an army of what appears to be inmates. Later that day I saw the clown holding a fake bazooka. The Red Wall team could have been mistaken for a small communist revolution in the corner of the field and staying true to the peculiarities of Asian culture, the blue team's theme appeared to be "The United States".

Day two changes the tone a bit, as the youngsters come out to flex their track and field muscles. The crown jewel of day two, which humors you constantly, is the hurdles. In one particular race I saw four of five runners trip over the first hurdle, and then two of those runners preceded to trip over hurdle number two as well. There is an amusing game of "catch up", I'll call it, where the kids run in a circle trying to catch there opponent and strike him with a fake tomahawk.

The costumes are elaborate, the displays monumental and the competition is fierce. Welcome to College Day (free whiskey after the show).

While living abroad in Barcelona, I found myself immersed in art. In class there was discussion of Salvador Dali's eccentricities, Picasso's transitions from one period to the next, and Miro's genius in simplicity. During free time, one cannot help but walk past the magnificent buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi, prompting more conversation. When discussion briefly lulled I often found myself in a museum examining the paintings in person, or walking through the natural, stimulating rooms of so many architectural masterpieces. Extracurricular activities included walking through Park Guell or Palacio Nacional, or down Las Ramblas where you will be surrounded on all sides by street artists, perpetually making something out of nothing. On a visit to the medieval alleys of El Born you will see graphic designers in expensive boutiques who constantly push creative thought to new places. From there it spreads itself slowly over the city, into every crevasse, until the whole city breaths creativity. This is where you find the best graphitti.

Saint Gabriel's College

I teach at Saint Gabriel's College in Bangkok. Another teacher and I have been assigned the task of writing English plaques for the statues in the wax museum, so I will share some history with you here. I was walking through the original building yesterday, which is reminiscent of an old plantation mansion in the Southern United States, and I took my time looking at some old photographs on the wall. The wooden floors flex and creak in a way that is beautiful and comfortable. There is a breeze that constantly travels through the windows that are never shuttered and you can feel the history in every breath you take. The college was built in 1920 by the Brothers of Saint Gabriel, and has turned into one of the premier schools in Bangkok. Below of some photographs from the walls of the school.

My Christmas present this year was a PADI Open Water Diver Certification. We spent four days on Koh Tao diving in beautiful, clear water surrounded by tropical fish including groupers, clown fish, barracudas, walk-man fish, and some massive bull sharks. The man with the amazing shark tattoo is Dave, our instructor, who took us flawlessly through the course. Controlling a class of 60 third graders who speak another language is very similar to controlling an angry mob. Thai teachers have an advantage. Commanding the students in Thai is infinitely easier than commanding them in English, for obvious reasons, and if that fails they will pull out the ruler or bamboo cane. I have one teacher who walks around the room singing, "bamboo rod is heeere, bamboo rod is heeere, wiiilll hit yooou, wiiilll hit yooou!" Usually a slap on the hand or a quick lash across the bum is sufficient, occasionally some open hand slaps on the back are administered. These physical attacks are more emotionally abusing than anything else, you can see in the students eyes that they are embarassed, not injured.

So what is the western teacher to do? I won't hit them and I cannot speak Thai. The Answer is CROWD CONTROL.

The first few moments in class are the most important. When the class sees that the white guy is in control, they will act absolutely crazy. Students will crowd around you asking for high fives, petting your foreign arm hair, and trying to show you their latest drawings. In the back there are boys dancing on desks and fighting and yelling. If you stand there yelling in English, it will have no effect. This is how you control the mob.

1. Tell the boys to sit down one or two times. Some will sit. Bring one boy (preferably the class leader) and tell him to write the number of each boy who is behaving poorly on the board for everyone to see under the title "BAD". Stand there at the front, silently, unsmiling, and point at boys whose number you want on the board. The key to crowd control is exposure. If you talk, everyone in the room will see your number next to the word "BAD" and that is embarrassing, regardless if there will be any tangible punishment.

2. If simple exposure doesn't keep the boys in check, I quantify their embarrassment. Next to boys that continue to talk or misbehave I write how many points they will lose that day. These are fictional points, never recorded, like a placebo. Responsible students will be silenced instantly, not wanting their grade to suffer and their parents to be disappointed. The bad seeds will become quieter with the rest of the mob. Still that might not be enough.

3. If there is still a student misbehaving (there may be 5 still talking in a class of sixty). You call their numbers and make them stand on their chairs. This is further exposure, standing above the rest of the students. A standing student who misbehaves will be scolded. I will ask questions about the reading assignments to the students who are standing, they won't be able to answer them and they will be further humiliated. Notice; I still have not raised my voice, spoke Thai, or hit the children.

4. If a boy still misbehaves, and they often do, I silence the whole class by isolating one student and humiliating them publicly. Never choose the worst boy, he is A.D.D., he won't understand the punishment and the other students don't care if he is the center of attention, that isn't unusual. Instead select the boy who is next to the worst boy. We are going to punish him for supporting the child who is the biggest problem. Call his number and bring him to the front of the room. The class sits silently waiting to see what you will do. Write his number on the board bigger than the other numbers. Then you scold him. Ask why is he talking during class. Ask if he wants to stay in the room or go home. Ask if he understands. He will be scared and will not talk again during class. Sit him on the floor in the corner of the room where everyone can see him.

5. After the mayhem has settled, explain the rules. Talking results in points off, then standing on your chair, then sitting in the hall. They will behave, if there is any further insubordination, stop class and put out the fire immediately. In crowd control, you have to run a tight ship.

Bangkok nightlife doesn't mess around. People from all over the world come here to prowl the streets in search of the craziest party, the best music, or some other less wholesome entertainment. Needless to say clubs and DJs here know how to throw a party. Last night we went to a warehouse party on the Chao Praya river sponsored by Smirnoff. There was a giant structure made of scaffolding and white paper, DJs and dancers in costumes protruding from every level. Party goers were given 3D glasses for the light show that was going on during the party, and your bucket (of vodka, red bull and sprite) was sold by the gaudiest lady boy money can buy. Spontaneous dance competitions would develop, only to be won moments later by a man dressed as the grim reaper on stilts that somehow did not impede his dance moves (which can only be described as "dirty"). A friend back home requested that I share some of this eastern intensity with the west, so here it is. The Bangkok DJs broadcast their music on Underground Bangkok. Enjoy!

Thai Nicknames

Just like any good organized crime ring, my third grade students all have nicknames to accompany their traditional Thai names. Below is a list of the students and their nicknames from my last class of the day. Just imagine how difficult it is to scold a kid named Yea.

Laos is Raw - The Lost Tapes

Laos is intense. It is a communist country with a strict curfew at midnight that is enforced by military police armed with AK-47s. We saw more than a few westerners get arrested for violating curfew (on the way back for violating it ourselves). In contrast, evidently it is acceptable to party your face off on the river all day before curfew. This means you tube down the river from bar to bar, enjoying free shots of whiskey, pumping dance music, and a variety of apparatuses that launch you into the water. There is even a slide that you cannot go down unless you have purchased a beer. Anyway, here are a few pictures of the mayhem. Enjoy!

The Raging South (The Lost Tapes)

This disposable camera captured some priceless images of the Raging South of Thailand. It has climbed the limestone cliffs in Railay and has seen the ocean floor off the coast of Phi Phi. If the flash was decent god knows what else it would have seen. Enjoy!

On the left you see "T", who owns a local bar in Railay. He said the largest monkey in the clan is named Mafia, and has been trying to kill him.This is Paradise

This insurance commercial is wildly popular in Thailand right now. All of my third grade classes know it by heart and sing it at the beginning of class. On occasion we will get a boy to come to the front and sing it A Capella on the microphone; priceless. Check out the video.

New Nickname

Today I walked into the room to a new nickname. The Thai kids pronounce my name "sack" or "seck" instead of "Zack", so they came up with something better. I walked in to 70 Thai second-graders reciting, "Gooood mooooorniiiing, Meeestaaahh Seexyy!"
