A Cornspiracy: America's Dirty Secret
Ladies and Gents, this is the first entry in an epic saga. What will unfold you will come to know as "The Cornspiracy". This elusive vegetable has been on the forefront of American feeding for centuries. It goes by Corn, Cobb and sometimes Kernel, but don't be seduced by the down home charm of this golden goddess, she's a killer. She wakes you up gently with a bowl of cereal, maybe with some creamer in your coffee. At lunch she slides out of a ketchup bottle onto a sandwich that's been in her back pocket for years. Whatever you have to drink will reek of her nectar. God help you at dinner time. Below is a testimony given by a man in the throws of passion with this old whore we call Cobb. Beware, what you read may disturb you.
nick: guess what im eating right now
nick: guess what im eating right now
me: something with ranch
nick: corn
me: theres corn in ranch
nick: yeah thats why its good
but we are talking kernel here
fresh off the cobb
ya follow
me: hahaha
the timer enters the subject
nick: my body will collapse if it doesnt get its daily dose of the miracle vegetable
nick: the people around me find it so strange
nick: when at the salad bar
i ask for more corn
me: please tell me why corn is important to you
nick: feces.
that was the initial feeling
but after further investigation
i find it truly a remarkable vegetable
a legacy
sustained entire civilizations
i just respect it
me: would you say you are dependent
nick: by choice
i try and eat corn 3-4 times a week
in the kernel form
of course
me: you like cobb
nick: i prefer a fresh cobb
but i dabble in canned corn
and maybe a chowder here or there
i like it in a salad
too
thats where my primary corn ingestion comes from

Barcelona's Graphitti Scene
While living abroad in Barcelona, I found myself immersed in art. In class there was discussion of Salvador Dali's eccentricities, Picasso's transitions from one period to the next, and Miro's genius in simplicity. During free time, one cannot help but walk past the magnificent buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi, prompting more conversation. When discussion briefly lulled I often found myself in a museum examining the paintings in person, or walking through the natural, stimulating rooms of so many architectural masterpieces. Extracurricular activities included walking through Park Guell or Palacio Nacional, or down Las Ramblas where you will be surrounded on all sides by street artists, perpetually making something out of nothing. On a visit to the medieval alleys of El Born you will see graphic designers in expensive boutiques who constantly push creative thought to new places. From there it spreads itself slowly over the city, into every crevasse, until the whole city breaths creativity. This is where you find the best graphitti.

Saint Gabriel's College
I teach at Saint Gabriel's College in Bangkok. Another teacher and I have been assigned the task of writing English plaques for the statues in the wax museum, so I will share some history with you here. I was walking through the original building yesterday, which is reminiscent of an old plantation mansion in the Southern United States, and I took my time looking at some old photographs on the wall. The wooden floors flex and creak in a way that is beautiful and comfortable. There is a breeze that constantly travels through the windows that are never shuttered and you can feel the history in every breath you take. The college was built in 1920 by the Brothers of Saint Gabriel, and has turned into one of the premier schools in Bangkok. Below of some photographs from the walls of the school.

Pause
This is a Swedish girl I met while traveling the islands in Southern Thailand. This is on Koh Samui at a cafe an hour before she flew back to Australia, ending a year long journey which took her as far as South America. Needless to say she was interesting. This picture has appeared on the blog before, but I decided to edit it and repost.

Dive Koh Tao
My Christmas present this year was a PADI Open Water Diver Certification. We spent four days on Koh Tao diving in beautiful, clear water surrounded by tropical fish including groupers, clown fish, barracudas, walk-man fish, and some massive bull sharks. The man with the amazing shark tattoo is Dave, our instructor, who took us flawlessly through the course. His website is here, he can set you up with a program from anywhere in the world and speaks 5 languages. Here are some selected photos of the experience. Soon to come, The Full Moon Party.
